NORSOK M-501: coatings for offshore and marine structures

The Norwegian offshore coating standard that sets the bar for surface preparation, systems and qualification in the harshest environments.

Updated By East Anglia Coating Solutions

NORSOK M-501, “Surface preparation and protective coating”, was written for the Norwegian offshore industry. Because it is so thorough, it is now referenced far beyond Norway, including for offshore wind and marine infrastructure around the UK coast.

What makes it different

  • Pre-qualified coating systems. Systems are defined for different exposures, such as atmospheric, splash zone and immersion, and must pass demanding laboratory testing before they can be used.
  • Strict surface preparation. Tight requirements for cleanliness, profile and soluble salt contamination before any coating is applied.
  • Qualified people. Coating inspectors and applicators must hold recognised qualifications, and applicators are expected to be trained and certified.
  • Procedure tests. Work usually starts with a test area that proves the procedure, equipment and people before production.

Where it applies in East Anglia

The Southern North Sea is home to major offshore wind farms, with operations and maintenance bases on the East Anglian coast. Structures, transition pieces and port equipment in these environments sit in the highest corrosivity categories of ISO 12944, where NORSOK-style requirements are common.

Working to NORSOK M-501

The standard is revised from time to time, and projects specify a particular revision. Always check which revision applies and read it alongside the project specification. Where the two differ, the project specification normally governs.

How we help

We specify and inspect high-performance systems for marine and offshore exposure, with close attention to preparation, salt control and climate. Where a project requires a specific inspector qualification, we will confirm the right person for the job. Talk to us about offshore work.

This guide summarises the standard for general understanding. Always work to the current edition and the project specification.
