Case study

Structural steel coating inspection and compliance

An inspection of structural steel where primer thickness, access and surface preparation had been questioned, with a survey that separated compliant steel from steel that needed work.

This work was carried out by our lead specialist before East Anglia Coating Solutions was established. The client and the previous employer are not named.

Background

On a major commercial construction project, questions had been raised about coating thickness and the quality of the surface preparation. The steel needed an independent inspection before anyone decided what to put right.

The challenge

The concerns were primer thickness against the specification, the preparation standard, coverage in places that are awkward to reach, and whether the coating would protect the steel for the long term.

Scope

  • Calibration checks on the dry film thickness gauges
  • Dry film thickness surveys
  • Inspection of members, brackets and connections
  • Review of surface preparation
  • Specification compliance assessment and technical reporting

What we found

Some areas met the specification. Others did not: primer was under thickness in difficult-to-access locations, application was inconsistent around brackets and connections, and some surfaces still needed better preparation.

Outcome

The survey marked the non-compliant areas, let the team prioritise the remedial work, improved the quality records, and gave a clearer basis for confidence in long-term coating performance.

What this shows

  • Independent coating inspection
  • Dry film thickness measurement
  • Surface preparation assessment
  • Specification compliance
  • Technical reporting
